Menstruation, and other problems related to it are one of major concern in today's worlds. Early menarche and menopause, dysmenorrhea (pain during menstruation), irregular menstrual cycles, mennorrhagia (excessive bleeding), and above all is increasing trend in patients with PCOD. These complaints & many others are affecting women and disturbing their well-being.
Our forefathers had recommended some specific rules or regimen for women while menstruating. Ayurveda calls it “Rajaswala Paricharya”. They have given the brief description of science behind it and how it influences overall health of women.
Menstrual cycle is the closest friend of woman, which stays with her from puberty to menopause, taking care & maintaining the most important role in women’s well being. In routine too we can see if the menstruation is abnormal it creates ill effects on body and if any illness are there it also affects menstruation, hence they are deeply interlinked.
In the hectic lifestyle of today, women are not able to take care of them in this sensitive period of menstruation, moreover the wrong eating & sleeping habits, stress of professional & personal life, lack of exercise, etc collaborates and the normal physiology of menstruation may disturb resulting in various illnesses. First they appear on small scale but definitely may turn into major one if we are careless about it.
Our grandmothers used to advice that menstruating woman should not get involved in household chores and take rest during this time. In few homes still the tradition is followed. The reason was nothing but the size of family in that time used to be large and most of the household work were done by the women of the family like cooking, washing cloths & utensils, cleaning etc.
In menstruation woman's body is at fatigue, & if she works vigorously it will affect her health so she must take rest during this time. This simple science our ancestors knew and hence they proposed the specific regimen so that at least woman can take rest in these days and it wont affect her health.
Ayurveda describes this regimen as - Rajaswala-Paricharya and tells us how to take care of ourselves and how to escape from illnesses by following simple thumb rules.
We cover it on our next article in detail - “Rajaswala Paricharya”
