Virudhanna - Incompatible Food

In our previous article on Aahar. we saw that correct combination of food (sanyog) is one of the most important thing to be considered while taking Aahar.

According to ayurveda every food has its own taste which we call Rasa,a heating or cooling energy which we call Virya ,and post digestive effect which we call as Vipaka. Also Some may possess Prabhava  meaning unexplainable special effects.

When two or more foods having same or different tastes (rasa) ,energy (virya) and post digestive effects (vipaka) are combined wrongly, Fire of Stomach (jathragni) can become overburdened , disturbing the process of digestion which results in production of Aama (improperly digested food particles or toxic substances)

In todays world, we live a hectic life. Most of us have to leave home early in morning for Job, College and with changing lifestyles we have our breakfast and lunch outside, and somedays even dinner.
Most of us have milk or tea with biscuits, khari, cream-roll, breads(Pav)etc as breakfasts.Milk has sweet taste(Madhur rasa) and according to ayurveda milk and salt are opposite to each other, so they are incompatible food.

So independently milk is nutritious for our body but when it’s mixed with above things it is not healthy. Before mixing valuable foods such as milk with other foods, we need to take care.
We now discuss more on concept of Virudhanna or incompatible food.

Below are the incompatible foods which we see, eat, in our day to day life.

Milk with melons
Milk is mild laxative and melon is diuretic in nature and also as Milk requires more time for digestion moreover the stomach acid required to digest melons causes the milk to curdle, so ayurveda advises against taking milk with melons and other sour fruits like orange, strawberry, pineapple etc.
Here same thing happens with fruit salads with milk or custard is incompatible.

Milk with banana
Milk if taken with banana, it diminishes agni (fire of stomach), changes intestinal flora, produce toxins. As both are heavy to digest (increases kapha dosha) clogs the channels and consumed frequently may cause sinus congestion, cold, cough, allergies etc.

Heating of curd
In hotels and in many homes women use curd, garlic-ginger paste to marinate chicken, mutton etc. & then its cooked. Sometimes while cooking vegetable biryani curd is added to it. Curd must not be heated in any way.
Eating curd in night is also incompatible food.

Boiled or cooked Honey
If honey is heated or baked it turns into a sticky glue like substance which clogs body channels (strotasa) and produce toxins. This includes having honey in your tea or drinking something hot after eating honey.

Honey and Ghee in equal quantity
Honey has heating, drying, scraping action whereas ghee has cooling, moisturising quality, if mixed it causes production of toxins. So when eating ghee and honey together mix in larger quantity of one or more for e.g. honey 1 gm+ ghee 5 gm.

Below we list some other incompatible food combinations which should avoided

Sometimes these incompatible foods may not create any harmful effects on body if

•    The person is young and has strong digestive system ( Jathragni / metabolic fire).
•    The person exercises enough and has good appetite.
•    If the incompatibility of that food is slight.

But the quantity of incompatible food is large and if taken frequently then it definitely affects the Agni and creates Agnimandya (inefficient metabolic fire) which later produce Ama. And slowly it will start creating various symptoms and if ignored may lead to life threatening diseases.
