Ayurveda And Sleep (Nidra) - Part 1

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise”.  We all have been hearing this since our childhood. Have you ever wondered - What is the meaning of this idiom? Why we have been told this since were kids?

Our ancestors have been telling a lot many things which we almost neglect saying that they are out dated or old fashioned but all the things they taught us have pure science behind it. Why sleep is so important for being well? What & how deep impact sleep can create on our body? These and many other things Ayurveda has described in detail.

In today’s world we are over stimulated constantly by caffeine, work or technology & the senses are overwhelmed & exhausted and we don’t even realize it. Just following a few proper guidelines can change our sleep pattern and its effects on body. So let us see what Ayurveda has to say about sleep or “Nidra”.

Ayurveda included nidra in “Trayopstambha” which means 3 pillars of life. The rest 2 are Aahar(Diet) & Brahmacharya (Celibacy). Aahar(diet/ food) is important component of life likewise sleep (Nidra) is also a vital component which helps exhausted body (up to the tissue level) and mind to recover from all wear out. So the proper management of these 3 factors is truly essential for health & any mismanagement can result in serious unhealthy state of body & mind.

Why we sleep?

When the mind including motor organs are exhausted and they dissociates themselves from their objects then the individual sleeps.

How Important is good sleep?

A good sleep at proper time & proper period tends to improve growth, strength, vigor, and complexion. Restores natural equilibrium of body tissues. There is no physiological system in human body which doesn’t get the amazing benefits of sound & soothing sleep.
Happiness-sadness, lean body- obesity, virility- infertility, and the utmost health- illness of life, all are depended on the quality of sleep you take. A well modulated sleep pattern will surely bring health happiness & longevity to the person.
Why restriction in the time & duration of Nidra ?
The deprivation of sleep in night & sleeping in the day time are equally disagreeable to health according to ayurveda. Any alteration can bring disturbance in dosha – dhatu – mala physiology of body.
