Diwali is the biggest festival for all of us. The fireworks, laddu’s, yummy snacks all add taste to our joy. But there is one thing that most of us hate is the morning “Abhyanga” where we have to get up early , massage our body with oil, and apply ‘ubtan’ (Mixture of skin cleansing herbal powders) and then take bath. Most of us wonder why is this important to wake up so early in the ‘vacation’ & in the winters just to have bath? Our parents & grand parents tell us that it’s a ritual which we have to follow anyway & so we do it. But still the question remains unanswered.
Ayurveda briefly tells us the scientific reasons of this & many other rituals during various festival and season which we follow. Ayurveda stated this marvellous concept called “Ritucharya” which gives the logical reasoning & the vision to see beyond the limits, the science of what we should do & not & why we should do it, in the different seasons.
When earth revolves around sun, it creates environmental changes on earth. It takes 365 days to earth to compete its one rotation around sun, which we call “Year”. Our sages explained this & also described that one year is divided into 6 Ritu’s (seasons).
The year is divided by “Ayan” or solstice. The six months of northern solstice or we call it “Uttarayana” & the six months of southern solstice which we call “Dakshinayana”. The above 6 ritu’s are divided by these ‘ayan’.
These “Ayan” & “Ritu’s” has a great influence on our body physiology. As they change, changes occurs in our dosha (Vata-http://www.ayurbeej.in/2015/12/vata-dosha-leader-of-tridosha.html#uds-search-results /Pitta-http://www.ayurbeej.in/2016/01/pitta-dosha-tridosha-sidhhanta.html/kapha-http://www.ayurbeej.in/2016/02/kapha-dosha-tridosha-sidhhanta_10.htm), dhatu (body tissues), Mala (wastes products). Hence according to their change if we do not change the lifestyle, it imbalances the dosha-dhatu-mala physiology of body and inturn may affect body health.
Importance of Aahar According to Rutu’s –
We have seen that Ritu affects our physiology so we have to adopt a lifestyle according to respective ritu which we call “Ritucharya”. Here while considering lifestyle, aahar(food) plays a major role. In our previous articles we have seen that aahar (food) is responsible for building of a healthy body & destroyer too. If wrong eating habit combines with wrong Ritucharya it can have disastrous results. For e.g. in summers if we have spicy deep fried food instead of having food with cool properties and light to digest , it leads to problems like hyperacidity, bloating.
Each one of us is curious about the many festivals we celebrate as they include some specific food preparations but many of us are still not aware about the science behind them. For e.g. we eat tilgul in makar sankranti time, In lohri time we eat Gajak , Peanuts ,Rewri and jaggery as both the festivals come in winter ,our digestion is strong and also energy need of our body is more thus these foods fulfil those requirements of body accordingly.
So in this way we come to know that festivals are not only rituals to follow but also the food eaten during this time has science behind it and also helps in maintaining good health.
Hence Ritu's and Aahar are deeply interlinked.
Correlation of Panchakarma and Rutu
When Tridosha (Vata , pitta and Kapha) are imbalanced ,they create various symptoms and if ignored can cause major illnesses. In this condition, we have to remove those toxicated doshas from the body with the help of panchakarma to cleanse our body.
Ayurveda explained that pacharkarma be done as per season to eliminate particular dosha.
Ayurveda also suggested that these panchakarma are not only prescribed for diseased individual but anyone can do panchakarma in respective seasons for cleansing of body and for healthy living.
So here we come know that Ritu’s have large influence on our health, & also on our illnesses. Hence we have to understand all the facts about seasons, & the lifestyle that has to follow accordingly. In our coming articles we will know about the lifestyle that has to adopt according to respective seasons.
